
The Global Carbon Council (GCC) recently participated in the Arab Federation of Capital Markets (AFCM) Annual Conference 2023 held in Muscat, Oman, on May 9 and 10. AFCM Annual Conference is among the largest events for stock exchanges and capital markets in the Arab world, gathering leaders who share insights to promote the growth of the Arabian capital market ecosystem.
During the event, Mr. Amit Thusu, Senior Director – Climate Action at GCC, joined a panel discussion on ‘Carbon Markets and Trading: To Work on the Path to Net Zero?’ where he introduced the audience to the GCC program and participated in discussions on the current status of GHG emission gaps, the role of Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs), carbon market finance and net-zero scenarios challenges and barriers in context with MENA and Africa. The panel also explored various topics, including the challenges and opportunities of carbon markets, exchanges the feasibility and attractiveness of carbon markets, the role of carbon taxes in reducing gas emissions, and how carbon allowances could help investors manage climate transition risks.
Mr. Thusu was accompanied by other distinguished panelists, including Bogolo Kenewendo, Africa Director at the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions Team, Rami El-Dokany, Executive Chairman at the Egyptian Exchange, Nandini Sukumar, CEO at the World Federation of Exchanges, Riham ElGizy, CEO at MENA Voluntary Carbon Market, and Anthony Miller, Chief Coordinator at the United Nations SSE.
