Journey Towards Decarbonization: Building a Net-Zero Future

As part of the Qatar National Dialogue on Climate Change (QNDCC) 2025, the Global Carbon Council (GCC), in partnership with the Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, Qatar Foundation, hosted a technical workshop titled “Journey Towards Decarbonization: Building a Net Zero Future.”

In partnership with the Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, Qatar Foundation, GCC conducted   two technical workshops empowering stakeholders to accelerate decarbonization actions and the carbon market development.

Moderated by Mr. Hemant Nandanpawar, Senior Director. The session brought together sustainability leaders, policymakers, and industry experts of the MENA region, to discuss pathways for achieving national decarbonization goals and advancing Qatar’s transition toward a net zero economy.

Masterclass on Decarbonization Strategies

The first session, Masterclass on Decarbonization Strategies, was conducted by Mr. Joseph Prakash.
Mr. Prakash presented an overview of the global decarbonization landscape, emphasizing the role of the Science Based Targets in shaping corporate climate commitments aligned with the Paris Agreement.

He highlighted the importance of comprehensive GHG accounting, base year performance assessment, and target setting, along with the adoption of cost-effective mitigation measures across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Practical examples from regional projects illustrated how organizations can design credible net zero transition plans and integrate decarbonization & sustainability within business strategy.

Spotlight Session: Decarbonization in the Cultural Sector

The second session, Spotlight on Decarbonization in the Cultural Sector, was presented by Mr. Aswin Madhusoodanan, Sustainability Lead at Qatar Museums (QM), who showcased Qatar Museums’ leadership in achieving carbon neutrality across multiple cultural landmarks — including the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), and the Fire Station Museum.

He outlined QM’s integrated decarbonization roadmap encompassing energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable material sourcing, waste reduction, and eco-conscious mobility, in collaboration with the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD).
Qatar Museums’ recognition through global awards such as the Green Apple Environment Awards, Green World Awards, and CSR Accreditation (UK) underscores its pioneering sustainability achievements in the region.

Advancing Qatar’s Net Zero Vision

The workshop reinforced the importance of collaborative action between public institutions, private organizations, and sustainability platforms to achieve Qatar’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term net zero commitments.

Through its ongoing partnership with Earthna, GCC continues to advance technical knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and the implementation of high-integrity climate action frameworks, supporting the development of a robust carbon market ecosystem in Qatar and beyond.
